About the Department

INTRODUCTION

  • This is one of the oldest science departments of the college, started its journey from 1960. The Honours course in physics was introduced in 1968.
  • Now department offers  B.Sc.  with 4 year major and 3 year major in physics under  NEP  system and previously  department offered  B.Sc. Honours  and General Course with  physics  under CBCS.
  • Department has three Seminar class room, one of them is equipped with ICT facilities and LCD TV.
  • There are seven laboratory rooms in the department of Physics . One separate dark room  is completely devoted to  the optical Experiment.
  •  A separate Computer laboratory has  been set up after introduction of  computational physics in the syllabus under  CBCS and NEP system .
  • About …sq meters of laboratory space is distributed over  Major  and Minor /Honours and General Course and computer laboratories.
  • The Department is located on the ground floor of the college building.
  • Department has  played an important role in conducting  B.Sc. Honours practical Examination every year as one of the centers of University of Burdwan.
  • There is a departmental library , in addition to the central library of the college , which caters to the need of its Honours and general students. This library contains more than 250 books. These books are a good mix of text and reference books.
  • A number of teachers are engaged in research activities in collaboration with eminent universities and research institutions and contribute to the peer reviewed journals.
  • Besides a computer laboratory, dept. has two desktops , three laptops and internet facilities, which are available for both the teachers and students.
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The College was established in 1948. The General Degree course in Physics started in 1960. At that time there were three full time teachers in the Department and one Demonstrator. The Honours course in Physics was introduced in 1968 and three additional teachers were appointed under the leadership of Dr. Haridas Sarkar, who eventually became Principal of the college. From 1968, the teaching and learning process improved to such an extent that this Department was acknowledged as one of the best in The University of Burdwan. Students from different areas came here to study and finally got well established in academic and professional careers. During 1976 to 2001, the department was provided higher secondary science stream. At the moment, the department is running with five full time professors, two lab instructors, two guest lecturers, three non-teaching lab attendants and two casual staff. Now the Department caters to around 75 students undergoing Honours course and around 160 students for general course with physics.
